Chautagne's housing stock is mostly old and made up of individual houses: depending on the municipality, between 79% and over 96% of homes are houses. Many have roof coverings well past their lifespan, in a damp lowland climate where alternating frost and thaw and the humidity of the marshland accelerate ageing.

Warning signs: broken or slipped tiles, established moss, a sagging ridge line, overflowing gutters, traces of damp under the roof or on upstairs walls. The longer a roof is left as it is, the higher the bill: a one-off repair turns into complete re-roofing with structural work.

Choosing a material is not just about looks: it depends on the pitch, the substrate, the character of the building and local rules. Tile remains the most common covering and the one most in keeping with the lowland Savoyard building style. Slate suits steep roofs and buildings of character.

Zinc and steel decking have their place on low pitches, extensions and certain contemporary architectural styles — useful in particular when converting a barn, where the aim is to distinguish the new part from the existing building.

A point specific to Chautagne: the PLUi protects roof and façade decoration, notably génoise eaves. On a traditional building, re-roofing must preserve them — this is not optional, and it is planned before the quote, not during the works.

Opening up a roof gives access to what is almost always the biggest source of heat loss in an old house. Insulating at that point costs a fraction of what a separate job would cost later: the scaffolding is up, the covering is removed, access is already in place.

Our RGE CertiRénov certification (no. CR-2026-73-0095) is the condition for accessing grants — MaPrimeRénov', CEE, éco-PTZ — for the insulation work. The Grand Lac conurbation also runs its own renovation grant scheme. These grants change regularly: we check the conditions in force at the time of your project and invite you to cross-check them on the official websites.

In the municipalities where vacancy is highest — Serrières-en-Chautagne and Motz exceed 9% vacant homes — it is often the combination of roof + insulation that brings a property back onto the market.

A roof cannot be priced over the phone. We go up and look: condition of the covering and detailing, condition of the roof structure and substrate, ventilation, zinc work, rainwater drainage. This inspection determines everything else.

You then receive a detailed quote, itemised line by line, with no catch-all entries. If structural repairs to the roof are needed, they are costed; if they are not, we do not add them. Our work is covered by a 10-year structural guarantee (garantie décennale).
